Every lesson Outpost publishes has to name which of these methods it uses, and at least one of them has to be top-tier evidence. A unit that can’t say how it teaches doesn’t ship β€” that isn’t a review policy, it’s a check that fails the build.

What we use

Retrieval practice

Make the learner pull the answer out of their own head before showing it to them. Recalling something is what strengthens it; rereading it mostly builds a feeling of familiarity that gets mistaken for knowing.

What it is not: Not high-stakes testing. The value is in the act of recall, which means the score must not matter.

PreK 2:
Ask the child to tell it back before you re-read it. 'What happened first?' before turning the page.
grades 3 5:
Two or three no-stakes questions at the start of a lesson, on last week's material, not today's.

Spaced practice

Spread the same material across days instead of massing it into one session. The forgetting between sessions is not wasted time β€” it is the mechanism.

What it is not: Not a daily-goal nag. Outpost never manufactures anxiety to produce a return visit.

The same five sounds, four short times a week, not one long Friday.

Weekly review of a topic from three weeks ago, permanently on the calendar.

Interleaving and worked examples

Alternate studying a solved example with solving one yourself, and mix problem types rather than blocking them. Blocked practice feels smoother and produces less durable learning.

What it is not: Not random. The mix is designed so the learner has to identify the type, which is the skill.

Watch me do one, then you do one, then me, then you.
grades 3 5:
Mixed problem sets where you must first decide which kind of problem it is.

Fade the worked example: full, then half, then blank.

Words and pictures together

Pair a verbal explanation with a graphic that carries the same structure. Two channels, one idea β€” not decoration.

What it is not: Not illustration for mood. A picture that does not carry information is cognitive load with no payoff.

Say it, show it, act it out.

Timelines and diagrams the learner draws, not ones handed to them.

Concrete β†’ pictorial β†’ abstract

Start with something you can hold, move to a drawing of it, then to the symbol. Singapore's mathematics syllabus calls this the model method and it is where the bar model comes from.

What it is not: Not manipulatives forever. The concrete stage is a bridge; leaving a learner on it is a failure too.

Count real objects before counting pictures of objects before counting numerals.
grades 3 5:
Bar models for every word problem, before any equation is written.
grades 6 8:
Bars become variables. The drawing survives the transition; that is the point.

Return to a concrete case whenever an abstraction stops making sense.

A budget you actually allocate before a lecture about appropriations.

Explicit instruction (Rosenshine's principles)

Small steps, model each one, ask many questions, check every student's understanding, guide the first practice, then release. Ten principles drawn from what effective teachers, cognitive science, and cognitive-support research independently converged on.

What it is not: Not lecturing. Rosenshine's teachers ask more questions and check more often than anyone else β€” that is the finding.

Mastery before moving on

Do not advance on a calendar. Advance on demonstrated understanding, with corrective work in between rather than a low grade and a new topic.

What it is not: Not holding a child back a year. It is holding a topic open until it is learned.

PreK 2:
A letter-sound is not done because the week is over.
grades 3 5:
Reteach and retest is normal, not remedial.
grades 6 8:
Prerequisite check before a unit that depends on one.
grades 9 12:
Revision to standard is the assignment, not extra credit.

The mastery-learning literature descends from Bloom's work on group instruction with feedback and correctives; effects are consistently positive though smaller than one-to-one tutoring. check it

Checking for understanding, and feedback that tells you what to do next

Frequent low-stakes checks that change what the teacher does next. Feedback that describes the gap and the next action beats a score every time.

What it is not: Not grading. A number tells a learner where they rank; it does not tell them what to do Monday.

Thumbs up, show me, say it back.
grades 3 5:
Exit tickets read before the next lesson is planned.
grades 6 8:
Feedback in the form of one specific next move.

Structured literacy β€” the five pillars

Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, taught explicitly and in sequence rather than hoped for through exposure.

What it is not: Not phonics alone. The panel's finding was that phonics has to be integrated with the other four.

PreK 2:
This is the whole job in these grades. Sound, letter, blend, read, understand.
grades 3 5:
Morphology and fluency continue; comprehension leans on knowledge.
grades 6 8:
Explicit vocabulary and academic language; decoding support for anyone still missing it.
grades 9 12:
Discipline-specific reading β€” a historian and a scientist read differently.
adult:
Adult learners who struggle to decode are taught to decode, plainly and without shame.

Comprehension runs on background knowledge

Reading comprehension is not a transferable skill you can drill in the abstract. What you already know about the topic predicts how much you understand. So the curriculum has to deliberately build wide knowledge.

What it is not: Not trivia. Knowledge is organized and sequenced so later learning has something to attach to.

PreK 2:
Read aloud far above the child's own decoding level. Talk about the world.
grades 3 5:
Content-rich units β€” history, science, art β€” as the reading material itself.
grades 6 8:
Sequenced knowledge so later texts assume earlier ones.
grades 9 12:
Primary sources, because a document is a knowledge object and a reading task at once.
adult:

High-dosage tutoring

One-to-one or very small group, several times a week, during the school day, by a consistent tutor. Among the largest reliable effects in education research.

What it is not: Not homework help once a month, and not an app. The effect comes from dosage, consistency, and a person.

Highest payoff here. Small group, daily, on foundational reading.
grades 3 5:
Same, plus arithmetic fluency.
grades 6 8:
Prerequisite repair before the gap compounds.
grades 9 12:
Course-embedded, on the actual coursework.
adult:
Outpost cannot provide a human tutor. It says so rather than implying software is one.

Nickow, Oreopoulos & Quan, meta-analysis of PreK-12 tutoring RCTs across roughly forty years: consistently substantial positive effects, larger when tutors are teachers or paraprofessionals, in earlier grades, at least three days a week, and during school. check it

Multiple ways in, for everyone

Offer more than one representation of the same content β€” text, audio, image, worked example, hands-on β€” to ALL learners, and let each person use what helps. Adjustable text, captions, contrast, and pacing are part of this, not an add-on.

What it is not: Not lowering the standard for anyone. The destination is fixed; the road is not.

At every level
PreK 2:
Hear it, see it, do it β€” all three, for every child.
grades 3 5:
Read it or listen to it; both count as reading the assignment.
grades 6 8:
Choice of how to show what you know, not choice of whether to know it.
grades 9 12:
Same standard, multiple routes to demonstrating it.
adult:
Adjustable text size, high contrast, screen-reader labels, and three-channel feedback are already shipped.

This is the defensible version of 'different learners are different.' The support for multiple representations is real (dual coding, accessibility law and practice). What is NOT supported is sorting learners into styles and matching instruction to the label β€” see learning-styles-meshing below. check it

Lesson study β€” the improvement loop

Teachers plan one lesson together, one teaches it while others watch the students, then they revise it and do it again. The unit of improvement is the lesson, not the teacher.

What it is not: Not teacher evaluation. Watching a colleague to grade them destroys the thing that makes it work.

PreK 2:
Same loop, applied to a read-aloud.
grades 3 5:
Watch the students, not the teacher. That is the discipline.
grades 6 8:
Revise the lesson, keep the notes, run it again next year.

Departmental, on the lesson everyone finds hardest to teach.

Long-standing Japanese professional-practice tradition (jugyou kenkyuu), extensively documented in the education literature. Adopted widely outside Japan; outcome evidence at scale is thinner than its documentation. check it

What we refuse to use

These stay written down on purpose. A standard that lists only good ideas can’t stop a bad one from walking back in.

REFUTED

Matching instruction to a learner's 'style'

The claim: Visual learners learn more from visual instruction, auditory learners from listening, and so on.

Pashler, McDaniel, Rohrer & Bjork reviewed this for the Association for Psychological Science and found the literature almost entirely failed to run the crossover-interaction study the claim requires; of the few that did, essentially none supported it and some contradicted it. Their conclusion: no adequate evidence base for using learning-styles assessments in general educational practice.

What we do instead: multiple-representations β€” give everyone more than one way in, and never label a learner with a style. People do have real preferences, and preferences are worth respecting; what does not hold up is the claim that teaching to the preference produces more learning.

This is the single most widely believed idea in education that the evidence does not support. It is listed here so that 'variations of learning for all' gets built as multiple representations for everyone, not as sorting children into three boxes. check it

CONTESTED

Minimally guided discovery for novices

The claim: Learners understand more deeply if they discover principles themselves with little instruction.

Strongly disputed for novices. The guided-instruction position β€” that people with little prior knowledge in a domain learn more from explicit guidance, and that guidance can be faded as expertise grows β€” is well argued from cognitive load research. Discovery and inquiry work better once a learner has the knowledge to reason with.

What we do instead: explicit-instruction first, with worked examples faded as the learner gains ground. Inquiry is a reward for knowledge, not a substitute for it.

Because 'let them explore' sounds generous and, applied to a beginner, mostly produces frustration and a wrong model that has to be unlearned. check it

Real systems we studied

Mississippi's reading turnaround

Sustained statewide investment in K-3 teacher knowledge of how reading works (LETRS training), literacy coaches placed in the lowest-performing schools, and a third-grade reading gate. Mississippi's grade-4 NAEP reading rose against a flat national picture, with gains across subgroups.

What we take: Teacher knowledge of the underlying science is the lever, not a program purchase. And a system that measures early and intervenes early beats one that discovers the problem in high school.

What doesn’t transfer: State-level results are correlational; several policies changed at once and the retention gate is debated on its own terms. We report what moved and name what is contested. check it

Singapore mathematics

A coherent, deliberately narrow spiral built on concrete β†’ pictorial β†’ abstract, with the bar model as the pictorial workhorse, and textbooks written to that sequence.

What we take: Coherence beats coverage. Fewer topics, taught until they are owned, sequenced so each one is the prerequisite for the next.

What doesn’t transfer: National context differs enormously β€” teacher preparation, tutoring culture, and social expectations are part of Singapore's result and do not transfer with the textbook. check it

Japanese lesson study

Teachers collaboratively plan, observe, and revise individual lessons over years, accumulating a public record of how to teach a specific idea well.

What we take: Improvement is stored in the lesson, not in the individual teacher's head, so it survives staff turnover. Outpost's equivalent is that every unit is versioned and re-gated on change.

What doesn’t transfer: It depends on collaboration time built into the school schedule, which most systems do not have. check it

Verification status

Every source below was located by search on 2026-08-06 from a sandbox whose network policy blocks direct page fetches. URLs are recorded as returned by search; 'last_verified' is the date that search ran, not the date a human opened the page. A human confirmation pass is owed and is tracked in MASTER_QUEUE.

Access

The access standard every Outpost unit is checked against, in the same shape as the pedagogy standard: named approaches, evidence tier, source, and what each one is NOT.

Access is not a learning style, and conflating the two does real harm in both directions.

The pedagogy standard REFUTES learning-styles matching: the belief that a person learns better when instruction is matched to a preferred sensory 'style' has been tested with the design that would show it and does not hold up. Someone who has absorbed that finding can wrongly conclude that accommodating a deaf or blind learner is more of the same thing. It is not, and the difference is not a subtlety.

A learning style is a stated preference about how someone likes to receive information that is otherwise fully available to them. A sensory disability means a channel is not available at all. Captioning a video for a deaf student is not catering to a preference β€” it is the difference between the content existing for that student and not existing. Braille is not a modality preference; it is literacy.

The test: Ask whether the learner could access the content unaided. If yes, you are in learning-styles territory and the evidence says do not bother matching. Deaf and hard of hearing

'Hearing impaired' covers a very wide range, and the right approach differs across it: a hard-of-hearing student with hearing aids in a mainstream classroom, a Deaf student whose first language is ASL, and a student with an auditory processing difference need materially different things. A single accommodation labelled 'for the hearing impaired' usually serves one of them and not the others.

Many Deaf people regard deafness as a linguistic and cultural identity rather than a deficit, and 'hearing impaired' is a term a good many reject. Outpost's own copy says 'deaf and hard of hearing.' The founder's phrasing is preserved in the directive above because it is a quotation, and changed everywhere it is our own words.

Captions on everything with sound

Synchronized text of speech and of meaningful non-speech audio. Not a transcript β€” timing is what makes it usable alongside the video.

Not this: Automatic speech recognition left unedited. Uncorrected auto-captions on technical or civic vocabulary produce confident nonsense, and a caption that is wrong is worse than one that is missing because the reader cannot tell.

Who else it helps: Captioning is the clearest case of access work that benefits nearly everyone: people in loud rooms, people in quiet rooms, non-native speakers, and anyone reading with the sound off, which is most people most of the time.

SYSTEM

Sign language as a first language, with English as a second

Bilingual-bimodal education: full access to a natural signed language from as early as possible, with written English taught as a second language on top of it.

Language deprivation in early childhood has consequences that reach far past language, and a signed language is the one channel guaranteed to be fully accessible to a deaf child from birth.

Not this: Signed English word order. ASL is a complete natural language with its own grammar, and manually coded English is a different thing that is often substituted for it.

Caveat: The comparative research here is genuinely difficult β€” populations are small, families differ enormously, and cochlear implants have changed the landscape within one generation. Presenting this as settled would misrepresent an active professional debate.

Remote microphone systems

The speaker wears a microphone that transmits directly to the student's hearing aid or implant, bypassing the room.

The problem in a classroom is very often distance and noise rather than volume. Hearing aids amplify the room including the room's noise; a remote microphone changes the signal-to-noise ratio, which is the thing that actually governs whether speech is intelligible.

Nothing carried by sound alone

Every alert, transition, correct-answer chime, and timer has a visible form as well as an audible one.

Not this: Adding a caption after the fact. If a game signals a wrong answer only with a sound, captioning the video does not fix the game.

A clear view of the speaker's face

Seating, lighting, and speaking practice that keep the face visible: one person speaking at a time, facing the room, not talking while turned toward a board.

Caveat: Widely taught and widely sensible; speechreading alone carries far less information than most hearing people assume, so this supports other access rather than substituting for it.

Blind and low vision

'Seeing impaired' likewise spans a wide range. A student with low vision who reads large print, a braille reader, and a student with a field loss need different things β€” and the choice between print and braille is one of the most consequential decisions made about a blind child's education.

Braille as literacy, not as an accommodation

Reading and writing braille fluently, taught as the student's literacy medium rather than as a support added to audio.

Listening is comprehension; braille is literacy. A student who only ever hears text does not build spelling, punctuation, or the structure of written language, and cannot proofread their own writing. Employment and literacy outcomes among blind adults are consistently reported as better for braille readers, though the comparison carries obvious selection effects and the field says so.

Not this: A last resort for students who cannot manage print. Deciding by current visual acuity alone ignores prognosis and reading stamina.

PRACTITIONER

The Expanded Core Curriculum

The nine areas a blind or low-vision student needs taught explicitly because they are otherwise absorbed by watching: compensatory skills, orientation and mobility, social interaction, independent living, recreation and leisure, career education, assistive technology, sensory efficiency, and self-determination.

This is the single most useful idea in the field for anyone building material. Enormous amounts of ordinary learning happen incidentally, by seeing other people do things. A student who cannot see them has to be taught directly what everyone else picked up sideways β€” and the usual failure is not teaching the subject badly, it is never noticing that the sideways channel was doing work.

Structure a screen reader can navigate

Real headings in order, real lists, real buttons and links, images with alt text that says what the image is FOR, and no meaning carried by color or position alone.

Not this: An accessibility overlay widget. Overlays are widely rejected by blind users and by the field; they sit on top of a broken page and are frequently worse than the page underneath.

Who else it helps: The same structure is what makes a page usable by keyboard, by search engines, and by anyone reading on a small screen.

Tactile graphics, models, and audio description

Raised-line diagrams and physical models for anything spatial β€” a branch-of-government chart, a district map, a bill's path β€” plus audio description of visual content that carries meaning.

Civics is unusually full of diagrams: flowcharts, org charts, maps, ballots. Describing a flowchart in a sentence is possible and takes deliberate effort; a tactile version of a district map teaches something a sentence cannot.

Who else it helps: Anyone over forty, anyone reading on a phone, anyone tired.

Deafblindness is its own thing

A learner with combined hearing and vision loss is not served by stacking a deaf accommodation on a blind one. Tactile signing, an intervener, and touch-based access are their own discipline.

Because the stacking assumption is the standard mistake, and naming it is the cheapest way to prevent it.

CONTESTED

Universal Design for Learning

A framework recommending multiple means of engagement, representation, and action/expression, designed in from the start rather than retrofitted.

The design principle is sound and the retrofit-versus-design-in argument is genuinely persuasive. What is weaker than commonly stated is the outcome evidence: systematic reviews have repeatedly found the research base thin and the implementations too varied to compare. We use it as an organizing frame and do not cite it as proof that anything works.

Text is the most accessible format there is

Real text can be enlarged, read aloud, brailled, translated, searched, and copied. Every other format degrades from it.

If something exists only as a video, an image, or an interaction, it does not fully exist for some of your readers. Outpost's own Academy is text-first for exactly this reason, and every game states its content in words as well as in play.

What every Outpost unit owes a learner

No unit ships without these. They are checkable, and the gate checks them.

  • The full content exists as text, in reading order, with real headings
  • Nothing essential is carried by color alone, by sound alone, or by position alone
  • Every image that carries meaning has alt text saying what it is for, and decorative images are marked decorative
  • Anything with sound has captions; anything with meaningful visuals has a description in words
  • Everything is operable by keyboard, in a visible order, with a visible focus indicator
  • Text reflows at 200% zoom with no loss of content and no horizontal scrolling
  • Motion is decorative only, and is suppressed under prefers-reduced-motion

And it is not enough: Sufficient. A page can clear every item above and still be hard to learn from. The floor prevents exclusion; it does not produce good teaching, and the pedagogy standard is the other half.

If this is your child

Outpost is a set of texts, games, and tools. It is not a school, not an IEP team, and not a specialist. If a child is deaf, blind, deafblind, or has any disability affecting access to learning, the people who can actually help are the ones with training and a legal duty: the school district's evaluation team, a teacher of the deaf or of the visually impaired, and β€” in the United States β€” the rights the IDEA gives you as a parent.

What Outpost can do: Make its own material fully accessible, say plainly where it is not, and never require a sense a child does not have in order to use it.

What it will not do: Assess your child, recommend a communication approach, or take a position in the disagreements families face over braille versus print or signing versus speech. Those are decisions for you with professionals who know your child, and a website that weighs in on them from a distance is doing harm while sounding helpful.

Where to start

  • Ask your school district in writing for an evaluation. The written request starts a legal timeline; a verbal one does not.
  • Ask for the specialist by title β€” a teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing, or a teacher of students with visual impairments β€” because districts do not always volunteer that the role exists.
  • Every state has a federally funded Parent Training and Information Center, free to you, whose job is to help parents through exactly this.
  • Ask what is being taught outside the academic subjects. For a blind child, the Expanded Core Curriculum is the question most often left unasked.
