Outpost status

What’s working right now

Most of Outpost doesn’t need a server. The Academy, the Arcade, the Founders’ Library and the Story Shelf are files your browser already has — they keep working when everything else here is broken. That was a choice made for children on bad school wifi, and it means an outage is almost always partial.

Working, regardless

These have no server dependency at all. Nothing that happens to our systems can take them down.

  • The Academy, Library, Story Shelf and Guide

    Working normally

All of it — 13 Academy units, 20 Founders' Library texts, 11 Story Shelf books, the Citizen's Guide, the curriculum catalogue. Account-free and offline by design.

  • The Outpost Arcade

    Working normally

All 25 games, both tracks, every difficulty. Scores held in the browser.

Needs our servers

We can’t tell

We can’t currently tell. Automatic health checks aren’t running yet, and we’d rather say so than show you a green tick we haven’t earned. If something isn’t working for you, it probably isn’t working.

  • Sign-in

    We can’t tell

If it’s down: Everything you can read or play without an account, which is most of Outpost: the Academy, the Arcade, the Founders' Library, the Story Shelf, the Guide, the Transparency Toolkit.

  • The civic assistant

    We can’t tell

If it’s down: Every source the assistant would have cited — the Founders' Library, the Academy units, the Transparency Toolkit, and the document archive are all still readable directly.

  • The bill tracker

    We can’t tell

If it’s down: How a bill becomes law, what the stages mean, and the Constitution's text on legislative power — all of that is in the Academy and the Founders' Library and does not depend on any feed.

  • Who represents me

    We can’t tell

If it’s down: The offices themselves — what a state representative does, what a county board does, and how to contact any office through its own public channel — are explained in the Guide and the Transparency Toolkit.

  • Money and lobbying data

    We can’t tell

If it’s down: The Transparency Toolkit still links you straight to the primary sources — FEC, USAspending, and the lobbying disclosure databases — which is where our numbers come from anyway.

  • Alerts and notifications

    We can’t tell

If it’s down: Public emergency channels are never routed through Outpost. Wireless Emergency Alerts, the Emergency Alert System, and your local emergency management office all work regardless of anything here.

  • What's Possible

    We can’t tell

If it’s down: The most recent edition stays readable — it is written to a file when it is published, not assembled on request.

  • The Drive mirror

    We can’t tell

If it’s down: Everything already mirrored, plus the full changelog and lineage. A failed sync leaves the previous generation intact — the mirror goes stale, it does not go missing.

  • The document archive

    We can’t tell

If it’s down: The Founders' Library is a separate static collection and is unaffected — 20 primary texts, readable in full.

What that means for you

  • Sign-in

Sign-in is unavailable right now, so anything tied to your account is paused. Everything you can read or play without signing in is working normally — that is most of Outpost. Your saved progress is safe and will be there when sign-in returns.

  • The civic assistant

The assistant cannot answer questions right now. Everything it draws on is still readable directly: the Founders' Library has the primary texts, and the Academy units carry their sources on the page.

  • The bill tracker

Live bill data is unavailable right now. We would rather show you nothing than show you a stale bill status and let you act on it.

  • Who represents me

The representative lookup is unavailable. If you already know who represents you, the Transparency Toolkit still shows every public way to reach an office.

  • Money and lobbying data

Our finance lookups are unavailable. The Transparency Toolkit links directly to the government databases we read from, so you can still get the answer at the source.

  • Alerts and notifications

Outpost alerts are paused. This does not affect any official emergency alert — those are delivered by the government directly to your phone and do not pass through us.

  • What's Possible

This week's edition cannot be refreshed right now. The last published edition is below and is still accurate as of its date.

  • The document archive

Archive search is unavailable. The Founders' Library is separate and still open, with the founding documents and the voices that answered them.

Outpost is not an emergency channel

Wireless Emergency Alerts and the Emergency Alert System are delivered by the government directly to your phone and do not pass through this or any app. Nothing on this page affects them. In an emergency, call 911. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988.

What we depend on

When one of these has an outage, so do the parts of Outpost that use it. Several publish their own status pages.
