PreK–12: what is taught, and in what order

The SCOPE AND SEQUENCE — what gets taught, in what order, at which grade band, and which method from the Curriculum Standard carries it. It is the spine. Individual lessons hang off it and are written against it, never the other way round.

Why the order is the artifact

A curriculum written lesson-by-lesson becomes a pile. What makes a curriculum work — the finding that shows up in every high-performing system studied — is COHERENCE: each thing taught is the prerequisite for the next thing, deliberately, in a stated order. Singapore's mathematics result is usually attributed to its narrowness and sequencing rather than to any individual lesson. So the sequence is the artifact, and it exists before a single unit is written. Reversing that order is the single most common way large curriculum projects fail.

What does not exist yet

The lessons. A full PreK–12 curriculum is thousands of units, and writing them is a multi-year project for a team, not something that gets finished in a session. Claiming otherwise would be the exact failure this project keeps refusing.

Coherence is what makes a curriculum work and it is the part that cannot be added later. Lessons can be written by many hands over years; the sequence has to be decided once, up front, by someone willing to say what comes before what. That decision is now made and written down.

The rules every unit clears

  • Every unit declares which methods from pedagogy_standard.json it uses, and at least one must be REPLICATED or PANEL tier. The gate enforces this and the build fails otherwise.
  • Every factual claim carries source_url and last_verified. No exceptions, at any grade.
  • No unit may declare a REFUTED method. Learning styles fails the build.
  • Sequenced, not spiral-for-its-own-sake: a topic returns only when the return does new work.
  • Nothing is taught as settled that is contested. Where scholars disagree, the disagreement is the content.
  • Every grade band names what a learner can DO at the end of it, in a sentence a parent can check.

The catalog

The full catalog of subjects Outpost's curriculum covers, organized in ten strands, each subject with a four-rung depth ladder and the evidence-backed methods that carry it. It is deliberately much wider than any school's course list.

The PreK-12 spine shipped first and it was a SPINE — five grade bands, twenty-two sequences, the load-bearing orderings. That is the right thing to build first and it is not a curriculum. It answered 'what order' without answering 'how much is there,' and the founder was right that the answer looked thin.

The parent decides, and the software does not have a vote

'Put this part on the parent.' Taken literally: the software presents the whole catalog, states what each subject is and why it is here, and then does nothing until a parent chooses. It does not recommend a track, does not nudge, and does not mark a declined subject as missing.

A small number of subjects are marked core_recommended — reading, writing, number sense, arithmetic, fractions, statistics, financial mathematics, civics, health, cooking, money, first aid, digital literacy, movement, source criticism, and American history. That marking is our judgment about what an adult life demands, stated openly. It is a recommendation and nothing else: a parent may decline every one of them and the software will not argue, warn, or report.

No child's selection is uploaded, scored, compared to another family's, or reported to anyone. A declined subject leaves no record of having been declined.

What free range means here

No fixed track, no required sequence across subjects, no grade-level gate. A learner can be four rungs deep in one subject and one rung deep in another, at any age, and that is the normal case rather than a problem to correct.

That order does not matter. Within a subject the depth ladder is ordered on purpose, and two of those orderings — sound before letter, fractions on a number line before fractions as shapes — are load-bearing and locked by their own tests. Free range is about breadth and pace, not about pretending prerequisites are optional.

Start from a preset, or don’t

Founder, 2026-08-06: 'obviously all curriculum should be completely customizable — presets if parents want.' Sixty-three subjects is the right amount of catalog and the wrong amount of first decision. A blank list of sixty-three checkboxes asks a parent to have already decided everything before they have seen anything, which is how people close the tab. A preset converts that into one decision they can then argue with, which is a much easier place to start disagreeing from.

A default, a track, a grade level, or a recommendation the software repeats. Nothing is applied automatically, no preset is pre-selected, and a person who never touches this section has not skipped a step.

Anyone who wants the whole catalog open and will narrow it later.

Reading taught sound-before-letter, number sense before arithmetic, and the things a small person learns by doing: moving, making, cooking alongside someone, being outside. Deliberately short — at this age the quantity of subjects is not the variable that matters.

An adult who was never taught the things adults are assumed to know.

The subjects people most often say they wish somebody had taught them, and every one of them pays back within a year: money, food, first aid, the internet, tools, and knowing where the time went.

Measurement and geometry because a trade runs on them, the making and engineering subjects, and the business half almost no trades training includes: money, contracts, planning, and writing clearly enough to bid a job.

The business subjects are not filler. The usual reason a skilled tradesperson struggles is not the trade.

The state a new visitor is already in. It is listed as a preset so that choosing nothing reads as a choice rather than as a step somebody failed to complete.

Nothing selected

Every preset is fully editable the moment it is applied, and the interface shows the same choose/decline buttons on every subject afterward. If a preset ever becomes something a person cannot immediately overrule, it has stopped being a preset and become a curriculum.

What have you already done?

Mostly adults choosing for themselves. A veteran does not need to be walked into how the chain of command works, a tradesperson does not need an introduction to measurement, and someone who raised three children has forgotten more about the health strand than most of it contains. Starting them at rung one is not rigor, it is an insult with a progress bar attached.

  • SELF-DECLARED, NEVER VERIFIED. Nothing is checked, nothing is uploaded, and nothing is asked for as proof. Verifying military service or a professional history means holding a record of it, and this app holds nothing.
  • IT MOVES A STARTING POINT AND NOTHING ELSE. No feature unlocks, no badge is granted, no credential is implied, and no rung is skipped in a subject where order is load-bearing — a person who reports thirty years in a trade still meets fractions on a number line before fractions as shapes.
  • ALWAYS OVERRULEABLE, IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. Set a rung lower than suggested because you would rather start from the beginning, or higher because you know yourself better than a list does. The suggestion is a suggestion.

Because a test measures what someone can produce under test conditions on one afternoon, which correlates with schooling and confidence at least as much as with knowing the thing. An adult who has run a payroll for a decade would likely score badly on a formal question about compound interest and does not need to be told they are a beginner at money. Asking what they have done is a worse measurement and a far better question.

By the end, a learner can

Hear and separate the sounds inside spoken words, name every letter and its most common sound, count and compare small quantities with objects, and tell back a story in the order it happened.

The one thing that matters most here: Phonemic awareness and letter-sound knowledge. Nothing else at this age has anything like the same downstream effect, and a child who leaves this band without it spends years catching up on something that took months to teach.

Read unfamiliar words by decoding them, read aloud smoothly enough to understand what they read, add and subtract within 100 with understanding rather than counting, and write a complete sentence that says one thing clearly.

The one thing that matters most here: Fluency. A child who decodes accurately but slowly is spending all their working memory on the words and has none left for the meaning — which looks like a comprehension problem and is not one.

Read to learn something they did not already know, multiply and divide with understanding, reason about fractions as numbers rather than pictures, write a paragraph that makes a point and supports it, and check whether a claim has a source.

The one thing that matters most here: Fractions. More than any other topic, difficulty with fractions in these years predicts difficulty with algebra later — and the usual cause is that fractions were taught as pictures of pizza rather than as numbers with a position on the number line.

Read a difficult text and say what it argues, use ratio and proportional reasoning, solve a linear equation and know what it means, write an argument that fairly states the other side, and trace a claim back to its source.

The one thing that matters most here: Proportional reasoning. It is the bridge between arithmetic and algebra, it underlies most of science, and it is the single most common place a student quietly stops understanding and starts imitating.

By the end, a learner can

Read a primary source and a hostile secondary source and reconcile them; use algebra and data reasoning on a real question; write an argument that survives contact with its strongest opponent; file a public-records request; read a job offer, a lease, and a loan and know what they cost.

The one thing that matters most here: The move from 'what happened' to 'how would I know.' Everything in this band is the same skill applied to different material, and it is the one that makes an adult hard to fool.

Every method named above is defined, sourced, and evidence-tiered in the Curriculum Standard, which also lists the ideas we refuse to use and the studies that refuted them. What already ships sits in the Academy and on the Resource Shelf.
