Hetty Green

A one-desk investment operation: government bonds, railroads, mortgages and real estate, and lending when panics made other lenders stop

Route through work
Put capital behind other people's work
  1. 1 ยท What failed

She contested her aunt Sylvia Ann Howland's will for the estate she expected to inherit outright, producing an earlier will and a 'second page' revoking later ones; opposing counsel said the signature on it was forged, and in 1868 the case ended against her.

  2. 2 ยท What it cost

Decades of press caricature โ€” her frugality and her black clothes written into a character the papers called the Witch of Wall Street โ€” in an era when finance had no place for a woman at all.

This field is the reason the archive exists. A record of the win without the years it took is a highlight reel, and highlight reels are how people get hurt.

  3. 3 ยท What worked

Buying sound assets when panics made them cheap and lending when credit dried up: bonds, railroads, mortgages, real estate โ€” and loans to cities, New York among them. Her own stated rule: buy cheap and sell dear.

  4. 4 ยท The lesson

Losing the inheritance case did not decide her route: the fortune was built afterwards, trade by trade, on discipline plain enough to say aloud โ€” and on keeping cash for the day nobody else has any.

Where this comes from

This is a documented business record, not a judgement of a person. Being named here is not being accused of anything. Spot an error? Use Report an Error โ€” corrections are logged, never silent.

Every route now has at least one figure

The archive names 5 routes through work โ€” employment, trade, ownership, investing, and combinations of them โ€” and each one now documents at least one journey, with its failure and its cost on the page.

One figure per route is a beginning, not coverage: a sample of how a route can go, never a survey of how it goes. This section is derived from the archive on every build, so if a route ever loses its last figure, the missing list above returns on its own.
